Hoodoo Almanac's Literary Treasure Hunt and Cultural Diversity Plunder
Black Herman

Harlem’s famous magician and conjure man, “Black Herman,” found himself caught in a whirlwind of drama, not from a failed illusion but from his tumultuous personal life. Mrs. Eva Rucker, his wife of ten years, filed for divorce, citing his repeated infidelities and, shockingly, three out-of-wedlock children brought into their home under questionable circumstances.

Eva revealed a jaw-dropping tale: Herman had presented her with not one but three babies over the years, all fathered by him with the same woman, Hazel Blackshaw. Twice, Eva forgave him after tearful promises of reform. The third child, however, was the breaking point, leading her to leave their home and seek financial and legal retribution. Eva demanded $100 per week in support and $1,000 in legal fees, claiming Herman raked in $1,700 weekly from his numerous businesses, including his herb shop, printing press, séances, and stage performances.

Despite his mystical prowess, Black Herman couldn’t conjure his way out of the courtroom. With evidence piled up, including affidavits from former employees and business associates, Eva painted a vivid picture of her husband’s double life—lavish in public, scandalous in private. Adding to the drama, the judge denied initial motions due to lack of corroborating evidence, but Eva’s legal team soon supplied the missing pieces, including testimony confirming Herman’s paternity of the children.
