She authored four novels and more than 50 published short stories, plays, and essays. She is considered by many to be the best-known author to address African American hoodoo and Voudou. Her primary works on conjure are “Hoodoo in America” (1931) and Mules and Men (1935). She is responsible for coining New Orleans as the “hoodoo capital of the world.”
