Originally, Bay Rum was made in the Virgin Islands where it evolved from a traditional islander remedy made from oil of bay leaves. The oil of bay proved useful as a cooling agent for soothing muscle aches and aching joints and was used as a massage oil for the skin and scalp. Eventually, islanders began to mix the oil of bay with alcohol and water and thus, Bay Rum was born. The largest producer of Bay Rum is still based on Saint Thomas, in the Virgin Islands.

The magickal associations of bay rum are quite versatile, making its use in any form especially gratifying. It can be used for protection, victory, healing, purification, strength, success, road opening, enhancing spiritual gifts and psychic powers, increasing wisdom, clarity of thought, and insight, warding off evil and the evil eye, and driving away enemies.
